Opera in 4 acts by Giacomo Puccini (8:30pm)
Conductor: Robert Rizzi Brignoli (Debut)
Paris, the Latin Quarter, c 1830. In their garret on Christmas Eve, the poet Rodolfo & the painter Marcello are trying to work in the
bitter cold. Their fellow-lodgers return: the philosopher Colline & the musician Schaunard, who has managed to obtain firewood, food
& wine. Evading an attempt by the landlord Benoit to collect the rent, they set out for the Cafe Momus, leaving Rodolfo to finish an
article. His neighbor Mimi, a seamstress, asks him to light her candle. Her coughing & pallor arouse his concern, her loveliness his
interest; the two are soon in love. They join the others at the cafe, where Marcello's former sweetheart Musetta stages an exhibition of
pouting, singing, screaming, & other histrionics for his benefit. She gets rid of her aging admirer Alcindoro & is passionately
reunited with Marcello. Both pairs of lovers have stormy relationships. Marcello & Musetta quarrel & separate; Rodolfo leaves Mimi
rather than watch her tuberculosis worsen in their life of poverty. Just before she dies, Mimi returns to the garret to be with Rodolfo. She
expresses her undying love for him. After the lovers share reminiscences, she dies peacefully.

Opera in 3 acts by Giuseppe Verdi (8:00pm)
Conductor: Paolo Arrivabeni (Debut)
In the title role of Rigoletto, Verdi created one of his most powerful and original psychological characterizations,
while the opera, as a whole is perhaps his most brilliantly tuneful score.
Mantua, 16th c. Rigoletto is an embittered, hunch-backed court jester whose sole joy in life is Gilda, the daughter he has
raised in seclusion from the world. At court he encourages the libertinism of the Duke of Manta, but is cursed by Count
Monterone, whose daughter the Duke has seduced. The Duke, incognito, has flirted with Gilda at church, and she has fallen
in love with him. The courtiers trick Rigoletto into assisting in the abduction of his own daughter (whom they believe to
be his mistress), and the Duke seduces her. Vowing vengeance, Rigoletto hires the assassin Sparafucile, using the latter's
sister Maddalena as lure to the philandering, disguised Duke. But, still in love with him, Gilda contrives to take the
place of her beloved Duke, and when Rigoletto comes to collect the Duke's body, he finds that the sack contains his expiring
daughter. He recalls the curse and falls senseless.
